Haryana Polls: 49.13% voter turnout till 3 pm

A total of 49.13% voter turnout was recorded for the 90-seat assembly election in Haryana, as of 3 pm, on Saturday.As of 3 pm, Palwal recorded a turnout of 56.02%, Jind at 53.94% and Ambala at 49.39%. Faridabad, Gurgaon, Hisar, and Jhajjar recorded turnouts of 41.74%, 38.61%, 51.25%, and 49.68%, respectively. The voting, which commenced at 7 am and will continue until 6 pm, involves 1,031 candidates across 90 constituencies, with 20,632 polling booths set up. Approximately 20.35 million voters, including over 1.07 million males, nearly 960,000 females, and 467 third-gender voters, are eligible to cast their votes.To ensure a smooth voting process, around 29,462 police personnel, 21,196 home guards, and 10,403 Special Police Officers have been deployed across the state. The JJP-ASP alliance is contesting all seats, with JJP fielding candidates in 70 constituencies and ASP in 20.In the 2019 elections, the BJP won 40 seats and formed a coalition government with JJP, which secured 10 seats. However, JJP later left the coalition. Election results for Haryana will be announced on October 8, alongside those for Jammu and Kashmir.What happened the last time?In the last Assembly polls in 2019, the BJP had won 40 seats, the Congress 31 and the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) 10.The Congress has left the Bhiwani seat for its INDIA bloc partner CPI(M), while the BJP has made way in Sirsa for Haryana Lokhit Party chief Gopal Kanda, who is seeking re-election.Prominent candidatesLeader of Opposition B S Hooda (Garhi Sampla-Kiloi), Indian National Lok Dal's Abhay Singh Chautala (Ellenabad), JJP's Dushyant Chautala (Uchana Kalan), BJP's Anil Vij (Ambala Cantonment), "Captain" Abhimanyu (Narnaund) and O P Dhankar (Badli), AAP's Anurag Dhanda (Kalayat), and Congress's Phogat, a former wrestler from Julana, are some of the more prominent candidates duking it out.From Tosham, cousins former MP Shruti Choudhry of the BJP and Congress's Anirudh Chaudhary are pitted against each other.From Dabwali, Devi Lal's grandson Aditya Devi Lal, an INLD candidate, is taking on the JJP's Digvijay Singh Chautala, the great-grandson of the former deputy prime minister.The BJP has fielded former chief minister late Bhajan Lal's grandson Bhavya Bishnoi from Adampur in Hisar, while its nominee from Ateli in Mahendragarh is Arti Rao, whose father Rao Inderjit Singh is a Union minister.Savitri Jindal (Hisar), Ranjit Chautala (Rania) and Chitra Sarwara (Ambala Cantonment) are contesting as Independent.Taking on Dushyant Chautala from Uchana is the Congress's Brijendra Singh, son of former Union minister Birender Singh.A few rebels from both the Congress and the BJP are also in the fray.(With inputs from agencies)
